The Power Of Blood Donation

Superheroes are not just fictional characters in comic books and movies. They are living among us and if you would like to be one too, here’s how to join the club!

It is well known that real superheroes save lives in danger, including the life of a stranger. The good news is, there is no need for you to fly, have a titanium body suit or wear your underpants on the outside. Your superpower is flowing within your body– your blood!

That’s right, you are born to be a superhero. Though, on a more serious note, how can your blood save lives?

This is why the World Health Organization (WHO) annually celebrates 14 June as World Blood Donor Day. This special day aims to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and to also appreciate the selfless act of unpaid blood donors around the world.

To encourage our readers to be an important part of our healthcare system and to commit to the selfless act of blood donation, here are some important facts!

#1 There are two types of blood donation – whole blood (the most common type of donation) and apheresis donation.

#2 Whole blood refers to donating blood in its complete form.

#3 Apheresis donation is the donation of individual blood components such as solely platelets or plasma, depending on the component required.

#4 In Malaysia, a blood donor must be above the age of 18

#5 A blood donor must weigh above 45 kilogrammes.
