March into March in Traditional Style

Living in modern times has its perks like the bounds and leaps being made in areas like technology, transport and thought. However, the way we dress is starting to look the same with office-compliant style of smart, muted colours and not too much flair.

Malaysia is a multicultural country so there is a myriad of traditional costumes, clothes and prints we can incorporate into our modern style. Here’re a few pointers on how to level up your style while staying true to your roots.

Cheongsams come in materials other than brocade so do check out linen and cotton ones that are better suited to our hot and sticky weather.

If your company has casual Fridays, come decked out in traditional wear! Be it a Punjabi suit or a cheongsam, do ensure that it is still office appropriate. Nothing too flashy or too short and if you’re in doubt, do check with the Human Resource department if traditional wear is allowed.

There are also beautiful prints that are essentially Malaysian. Batik can be worn in the form of baju kurung or as an accessory like a scarf.

Try pairing a mandarin collar blouse with your usual work slacks instead of your usual button-down shirt for a chic twist.

Pua kumbu is a traditional patterned cloth used by the Iban from Sarawak and its unique print might be a little too much if you’re dressed head to toe in it. Do pick one part of your outfit to incorporate it in, whether it’s your shoes, handbag, blouse or skirt.
