The three main founders have known each other collectively for more than 30 years. Each of us have lived the corporate life and some still do. There are two main things that we have in common between the three founders, which firstly is the love to take care for ourselves. The other thing we have in common is that each of our lives have been involved in either social contribution or social entrepreneurship. So, that was the binding factor between us.
The idea came about because we have always wanted to do something together. We lead very busy lives, we workout and we did our own bars and sorts. So, we sat down and thought, “Hey, this might be an idea to take forward”. We sat around, talked about it and we took the initiative to move forward. Underlining that we are involved in social contribution, so there had to be a purpose to what we are doing. So, that was how we tied those things together.[/info_list_item][info_list_item list_title=”When did the founding team come into play?” list_icon=”Defaults-comments” animation=”fadeInUp”]When we wanted to push things further, we knew that it’s not enough to produce these bars in our very own kitchen. So that’s how we sought for the three ladies and the idea is to also see how bright young minds.
So, we reached out to the 3 of them. For us, it was important to find young talents that are equally passionate about where this would take us. That’s why we decided to have them onboard.
The other focus for us was how to create this opportunity for young local talents. To have the ability to put into practice what they learn and they had the freedom to research and figure out what would be the best bars.[/info_list_item][info_list_item list_title=”Could you tell us more about the bars?” list_icon=”Defaults-comments” animation=”fadeInUp”]The bars that we have aren’t exactly protein bars but there is a lot of focus on the protein content of the bars because that’s needed to build our muscles. So, we try to focus on that. Ensuring that it’s natural, no added sugars as well. We wanted something identifiable locally.
In the beginning when we did our Research and Development (R&D) in the kitchen, we played around with the flavours. We were trying to be unique and yet come up with flavours familiar to our Asian palate because most of the snack bars sold are very general and Westernised.
We use premium nuts such as walnuts and cashew nuts. All the goodness are in there. It’s considered high protein and when we consulted our dietitian, nuts are very complete in terms of nutrition and you can use it as a meal replacement. As for jackfruit, it’s special to us. Not many products use jackfruit and chocolate at the same time because both have two distinct tastes. Though, why not combine it?
We know that Asians enjoy food with distinct flavours. So, why not?[/info_list_item][info_list_item list_title=”How long does it take to come up with the bars?” list_icon=”Defaults-comments” animation=”fadeInUp”]The R&D takes about two to three months to finalise the flavours. During R&D, we create six to nine flavours and we will proceed with a sensory taste test. So, the top 3 is what’s available for now. For production, it takes around eight days to create 2000 to 3000 bars because we make it ourselves. We include single moms in the production line. We give them the opportunity to improve their skills and be part of it.
We decided to hire single moms to give them a side income, to include in the production and part of our whole social contribution back to the local community as well.[/info_list_item][info_list_item list_title=”During times of disagreement, how do you resolve it between each other?” list_icon=”Defaults-comments” animation=”fadeInUp”]I always win! (Ida jokes). It’s always healthy to have discussions and disagreements are part of that. We do have some of that but whatever it is, it comes back to what we value most. We come back to the intend of what we want to do and the intention is, as much as it’s a business, the intention is to do good. We wanted our bars to be more accessible to people from all walks of life. So that’s how we thought about it. It’s about the moms, dads that would buy for themselves and their children, the gym junkies and people who are on the go. Hopefully we educate people to be more mindful of eating clean. As Malaysians we love our food, we love our snacks. Just be more conscious and aware of what we consume.[/info_list_item][info_list_item list_title=”What are the future plans for EatForGood?” list_icon=”Defaults-comments” animation=”fadeInUp”]One is to continue to help the local community either through sourcing our products, hiring local talents and feeding the malnourished as well. That remains to be a focus. Hopefully also educating people about healthier options as well. I (Ida) would love to see the EatForGood snacks in the hands of every other person I run into. As they go about their lives, that would be fantastic because every purchase of these bars, helps us contribute to our nutrition program for children to have access to good nutritious meals.
