Accessorising is a fun and fashionable experience for many but for some, it is often avoided as it gives an uncomfortable experience such as itchy earlobes, a rash around the neck or swelling around the wrist.
Nickel allergy is one of the most common skin allergies. Besides costume jewellery, phones, watches, coins as well as eyeglasses are commonly made out of nickel.
If your skin starts to itch within 12 to 48 hours after coming in contact with nickel, you most likely have a nickel allergy and if so, here’s what you need to do:
#1 Check the material
Instead of nickel, do make sure that your jewellery is made out of surgical-grade stainless steel or other materials such as platinum, or titanium.
#2 Invest well for daily jewellery
For jewellery worn daily such as your wedding ring, we highly recommend that you invest in one made out of a less-allergic metal.
#3 For extremely sensitive individuals
For individuals who are extremely sensitive to nickel, you may want to avoid food that has the presence of nickel such as nuts, seeds, chocolate and black tea.
If left untreated, your skin may darken and crack which could then lead to an infection. Hence, it’s best to seek help if you suspect your rash or skin irritation might be caused by a nickel allergy.
