Crazy For Poke?

You’ve seen these insta-worthy bowls on social media, you’ve heard people talk about it and you’re probably seeing more cafes and restaurants upgrading their menus to include these delicious bowls.

Poke (pronounced as poh-keh) bowls are one of the hottest food trends in 2018 and there are many reasons as to why. These umami packed bowls are perfect for any meal because they can be tailored to your dietary needs. Plus, poke bowls consists of a variety of ingredients which gives you the opportunity to have a healthier and balanced meal.

Poke bowls may seem like a tedious dish to prepare but they’re actually pretty simple. There’s no correct or wrong to this Hawaiian native dish because you can be as creative as you want. A general guide to preparing a poke bowl is to have a base such as brown rice or salad leaves, protein such as fish and seasonings or toppings such as more vegetables, seeds and nuts.

You can start by trying these simple Poke bowl recipes out!

Salmon Poke Bowl

Ingredients:

  • 200 g Sashimi-grade raw salmon
  • 1 tbsp Shoyu
  • ½ Japanese cucumber
  • 1 Red radish
  • A handful of dried seaweed
  • ¼ cup Cooked Japanese rice

Method:

  1. Marinate salmon with shoyu. Then, place in a container and refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. Slice red radish and japanese cucumber thinly.
  3. In a bowl, place Japanese rice at the bottom.
  4. Then, top it with salmon, japanese cucumber, seaweed and red radish.
  5. Enjoy immediately!

Shrimp poke bowl

Ingredients:

  • 6 Prawns, shelled
  • ¼ Cucumber
  • 2 tbsp Marinated wakame (Marinated Japanese seaweed)
  • 2 tbsp Edamame, steamed
  • 1 Red radish
  • 1 tbsp Pickled onions
  • ¼ cup Cooked brown rice
  • Salt

  1. Blanch prawns in hot boiling water until well cooked.
  2. Season prawns with a pinch of salt and set aside.
  3. Then, slice red radish thinly and set aside.
  4. With a fruit peeler, peel the cucumber vertically so that you’ll have thin strips of cucumber.
  5. With a bowl, place rice as the base. Then, top it with prawns, red radish, cucumber, edamame and wakame.
  6. Enjoy the poke bowl while it’s fresh.

Tip: Feel free to pack your Poke bowl with your favourite vegetables or if you’re not too keen on having rice, you can always swap the base for salad leaves.
