Today, with our laptops and tablets, these technological marvels allow us to work anywhere and anytime. Thus, we should have better work-life balance. However, the converse is also true. With these gadgets, we can work round the clock and for some it becomes their entire life, impinging on their health, relationships and mental well-being.
Here are signs you’re a workaholic and need to take a step back:
Working on vacation
Did you pack your laptop and let the whole office know you can be contactable via email? Now, doesn’t that defeat the purpose of a vacation? Turn off your work email and chat group notifications and don’t even bring your laptop. It’s important to have boundaries in order to fully recharge on your vacation and enjoy its benefits.
You fall sick all the time
Overworking is associated with stress and health problems such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, weak immune system and others are more likely to occur.
Even with a heavy workload, take the full one hour of your lunch break just having lunch. Don’t check your emails or better yet, don’t eat your lunch (and dinner!) at your work desk. Get enough sleep and ensure you exercise regularly as well to improve your mind, body and also work quality!
You feel bad for not working
If you feel stressed about not working, that’s definitely a sign that you’re a workaholic and this is unhealthy. Success doesn’t mean you need to chain yourself to your work desk. Say no to new responsibilities that will not benefit you professionally or personally especially if you don’t have time for them.
You don’t have hobbies or interests outside of work
What are your hobbies or interests? If you can’t answer these questions, and also reject exercise, volunteering or meeting friends after work hours because it might interfere with wok, you’re definitely a workaholic. It isn’t a waste of time to indulge in your hobbies or pursuing interests outside of work. These hobbies and interests will keep your mind fresh and ready to help tackle the coming work day!
