Allergies at work

Too tired to do your work because your allergy symptoms kept you up all night? Conversely, you had to take medication to manage your symptoms that knocks you out and you’re too sleepy at work to do anything productive. You could also be allergic to something in your workplace but there’s no reason to panic just yet.

The first thing to do is identify what is triggering your allergies and try to manage those triggers. Ensure that your workplace is well-ventilated with the right amount of humidity to minimise mould. Additionally, if you’re allergic to dust mites and work in a carpeted office, speak to management to make sure that it’s vacuumed and cleaned regularly. Who knows, you could be benefiting another colleague who is also allergic to dust mites.

As for the side effects of medication, older antihistamines can make you feel drowsy and decongestants such as pseudoephedrine can keep you up at night. Check with your pharmacist and perhaps ask for newer options in the market that don’t make you drowsy. If in doubt, do speak to your doctor or friendly pharmacist for their advice on managing your symptoms with minimal side effects.
